Wellness Care

Prevention is the key to your pet’s long term health. Our vets recommend the following routine wellness care.

Yearly Physical Exams

Yearly physical exams provide an opportunity to assess your pet’s overall health, discuss any changes we see as well as any concerns or questions you may have. During the exam the vet will:

  • Assess eyes/vision, ears coat and skin
  • Check the teeth and oral cavity
  • Listen to the heart and lungs
  • Palpate the abdomen, lymph nodes
  • Assess the joints and muscles

Routine Blood Work

Early detection of diseases that often have no initial visible symptoms — such as diabetes, heart disease, endocrine disease, and cancer — result in faster treatment and better overall health for your pet. For this reason, we recommend yearly a comprehensive blood panel for all senior pets.

Vaccinations are not only safe and effective; they are an important and fundamental piece of your pet’s preventative healthcare plan. Advances in veterinary immunology have made diseases that once were relatively common and fatal to unprotected pets easily preventable. When it comes to vaccines, some cat owners are worried about injection site tumors and bad reactions. But at FMA, we use specialized cat rabies vaccines to help prevent this possibility. We give vaccinations by appointment Monday-Friday and on Saturday from 1-5pm.

Deworming and fecal check

Dangerous parasites are present in the environment and if brought into your home, these parasites can be passed from your pet to you and your family. Yearly fecal checks and deworming are the best way to prevent parasitic disease in your dog or cat.

Heartworm Disease Prevention

Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition that an estimated 1 million dogs in the United States are infected with the today. Parasitic worms (heartworms), which are transmitted by mosquitoes, attack the heart, lungs, and related blood vessels in both dogs and cats. Heartworm disease is 100% preventable. It is required a dog be tested prior to beginning any heartworm preventative. For pets which are kept on prevention year round we recommend testing every 2 years.

Preventative Medications

Since heartworm, fleas, and ticks are prevalent in our area of the country, we recommend that your pet receive preventative medication for these pests and would be happy to help you determine which is best for your companion.

Revolution is a safe and simple monthly topical medication used to protect your pet from heartworms, fleas, and ear mites. It also protects dogs from ticks and sarcoptic mange and cats from roundworms and hookworms.

BRAVECTO is a tasty oral chew that gives your dog up to 12 weeks of protection against fleas and ticks.

Spay & Neuter

Spay & neuter procedures are available by appointment Monday-Friday. We have optional comfort medication available to keep your pet pain free during and after the procedure.

DNA Testing for Dogs

Beginning March 2015 we are offering blood DNA tests for dogs. This test screens for over 30 genetic conditions/mutations. Read more here.
